We Love Lucy!

By Beth Beutler
1     Lucille Ball was born August 6, 1911. She is best known for her comedic routines, especially in the television show, I Love Lucy. She was married to Desi Arnaz, who played her husband, Ricky Ricardo, on the show. Both contributed to television history with their work of the three-camera technique and the idea of syndicating shows. She was the first woman to own a major television studio.

2     Lucille Ball's early life was not an easy one. Her father passed away during her preschool years, and consequently her mother spent much time working outside the home. Her grandparents took an active role in raising her and her brother. One of her classmates at drama school was Bette Davis, a future movie star.

3     She entered the entertainment industry anyway by becoming a Goldwyn Girl (a group of female dancers that performed in films). Later she obtained roles in small budget films as a contract actor and later, a few larger budget films. During the filming of Too Many Girls (1940), she fell in love with Desi Arnaz, and they were married in November 1940.
