Respect, Kindness, Consideration, Honesty - Biography of Emily Post

By Beth Beutler
1     Emily Post was born in Baltimore to a wealthy family. Her date of birth is disputed, but her own (family's) website says she was born October 27, 1872. While growing up, she was educated at home and then at a private finishing school. She met her husband, Edwin, at a ball during her debut or "coming out" into society. (Years ago, young girls were introduced to society at a series of parties and balls. They were called debutantes.) They were married in 1892 and were divorced by 1906. After their two sons went to school, Emily began to write.

2     She started writing in order to earn needed income, and at first she wrote articles on subjects such as interior decorating and architecture and romantic fiction stories. She published five novels and humorous travel stories. One of her publishers requested that she write about etiquette, so in 1922 she produced Etiquette: In Society, In Business, In Politics, and At Home. It became an instant best-seller and made her a celebrity and an outstanding career woman.

3     After the success of that book, Emily Post wrote with a special purpose. Her primary topic was to instruct individuals on proper etiquette. What is etiquette? Etiquette is the rules and conventions of behavior regarding how individuals should conduct themselves in social groups or situations. It can include information about proper manners, social skills, acceptable dress, and appropriate actions in various settings. Post said "manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others."
