James Herriot - Beloved Author and Vet

By Phyllis Naegeli
1     James Herriot was an author beloved by many people. James Herriot was the pen name of James Alfred (Alf) Wight. He was born in Sunderland, England, on October 3, 1916. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Glasgow, Scotland. There, he grew up as the only child of James and Hannah Wight. Glasgow was a large, bustling city surrounded by lush countryside. James grew to love spending time in the hills and meadows near his home.

2     His love for animals began in his childhood. When he was twelve, his parents gave him an Irish setter puppy as a gift. The dog, Don, was beloved by James and became his constant companion. This gift had a deep effect on his choice of careers.

3     James's parents worked hard to provide him with the best education. When the time came, his mother insisted that he attend an exclusive high school in Glasgow. He was sent to Hillhead High School where he excelled in English, French, and Latin. These subjects enabled him to qualify to attend Glasgow Veterinary College, where he spent five years. Upon graduating from college, he took a position in Yorkshire, England, with J. Donald Sinclair. In addition, he joined the Royal Air Force and served from 1941 to 1943 during World War II. Yorkshire became his home for life. There, he raised a family with his wife, Catherine Danbury. They married on November 5, 1941, and had two children - Jim and Rosemary.
