Il ranch dei Tumbleweed

1     Mi chiedo a cosa assomiglino i tumbleweed. Potrei scoprirlo subito. La mia migliore amica, Rena, vive in Texas. Ero così triste dopo che traslocò pochi mesi fa, ma questa è un'altra storia.
 
2     Suo padre ottenne un lavoro in un ranch a Bandara, in Texas. Si tratta di uno di quei ranch per turisti, dove le persone si recano per trascorrere le vacanze. Rena invitò la mia famiglia per una visita. Mi ricordo cosa accadde quando per prima lo proposi.
 
3     Eravamo a tavola per la cena, gustando delle fajitas, quando chiesi, "Allora, gente. Cosa ne pensereste di andare in un ranch per turisti per le vacanze?"
 
4     "Un ranch estivo?" mia sorella minore Heather chiese, facendo una strana faccia. "Perché dovrei volerlo? Preferisco piuttosto andare al mare!"
 
5     "Possiamo andare al mare in qualsiasi momento," ribattei. Iniziammo a discutere riguardo ai benefici dell'andare al mare piuttosto che andare al ranch.
 
6     "Calmatevi, bambine," intimò il papà. "Un ranch potrebbe essere divertente. Ho lavorato in un ranch un'estate quando ero ragazzino".
 
7     "Non l'avevo mai saputo," dissi. Mio padre è un tipo avventuroso, così non si sa mai che cosa ha sperimentato!
 
8     "Sì vivevo in una casettina per i mandriani e tutto il resto." Il papà si strofinò la bocca con il tovagliolo.
