Tumbleweed Ranch

By Beth Beutler
I wonder what tumbleweeds look like. I may find out soon. My best friend, Rena, lives in Texas. I was so sad after she moved a few months ago, but that's another story.

Her father got a job on a ranch in Bandara, Texas. It's one of those dude ranches where people go to have a vacation. Rena invited my family for a visit. I remember what happened when I first brought it up.

We were at the dinner table enjoying some fajitas when I asked, "So, everyone, what would you think of going to a dude ranch for vacation?"

"A dude ranch?" my younger sister Heather asked, making a strange face. "Why would I want to do that? I'd rather go to the beach!"

"We can go to the beach anytime," I retorted. We started arguing about the benefits of going to a beach verses going to a ranch.

"Settle down, kids," Dad commanded. "A ranch may be fun. I worked at a ranch one summer when I was a teenager."

"I never knew that," I said. My father is an adventurous type, so you never know what he's experienced!

"Yes. I lived in a bunk house and everything." Dad wiped his mouth with his napkin.

"Tell us more, Dad," my sister asked, wide-eyed. Suddenly she was interested, but I knew she was just acting the part of "Daddy's little girl." I rolled my eyes.
