Whose Signature Is On Your Dollar Bill?
By Joyce Furstenau

1     Take a close look at a dollar bill. If it was printed after August 2001, it carries the signature of Anna Escobedo Cabral, Rosario Marin, or Rosa Gumataotao Rios. These three women were the last three treasurers to hold office through 2012.
2     President Harry S. Truman wanted to appoint a woman to an important political position while he was in office. In 1949, he appointed Georgia Neece Clark as the first woman treasurer. Every treasurer since then has been a woman. Six of the past ten treasurers have also been Hispanic women.
3     The Treasurer of the United States is a government official that has custody of U.S. government funds. The Department of the Treasury deals with the economy and finances of our country. The treasurer is responsible for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the U.S. Mint, where coins are made, and U.S. Savings Bonds office, among other things. The treasurer's signature is on all paper currency.
