Summer Learning: Understanding Sunscreen
By Colleen Messina

1     Summer is here, and it is time for fun in the sun. One important part of enjoying summer days is protecting your skin, but labels on sunscreen can be confusing. Your parents might encourage you to do some summer learning, so understanding sunscreen might be a good place to start. For example, what exactly does SPF mean?

2     The SPF rating can be found on sunscreens, lotions, and cosmetics. SPF stands for sun protection factor. The SPF number refers to the sunscreen's ability to block out the harmful ultraviolet B (UVB) rays of the sun that cause sunburns. Products with a higher SPF offer more protection than products with lower SPF numbers.
