George W. G. Ferris

Ferris Wheel Day

Reading Comprehension for February 14

Have you ever wondered why some people invent things? Sometimes they are looking for ways to make money. Sometimes they are following a dream. Many times, it's some of both. That's the reason George Ferris invented his Ferris wheel.

George W. G. Ferris, Jr. was born in Galesburg, Illinois, in 1859. When he was five during the Civil War, his family moved to Nevada. He attended high school in California but chose to go to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, where he graduated in 1881. George used his engineering degree to find work.

For a few months, he worked on the line for a new railroad track in West Virginia. The next year he worked for the Queen City West Virginia Mining Company, designing a trestle over a river and three 1,800 foot tunnels.
