Look around at what everyone is wearing. For school, work, or play, many people like to wear jeans. Did you ever wonder where jeans came from? They were developed by a man named Levi Strauss in 1873.


Levi was born in Germany in 1829. He and at least two brothers or half-brothers moved to America to settle in New York City. There, his brothers, Jonas and Louis, opened a dry goods store. Levi learned the trade from them.


When the California gold rush hit in 1849, waves of men went west in search of their fortunes. Levi was determined to go west as well. He wanted to make his fortune by selling to the miners. He opened a dry goods store in San Francisco in 1850.
