Robert Louis Stevenson

Reading Comprehension for November 13

Do you like to read books? What genre of books do you enjoy? How about adventure stories full of danger and suspense? Perhaps you prefer creepy stories that make you look over your shoulder when it starts to get dark. If you choose either of those, you might like to read stories by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was his parents' only son. As a child he contracted an illness that caused breathing problems his entire life, which kept him at home in bed much of the time. While he was confined to bed, he could read and write. He loved the stories his nurse, Alison Cunningham (Cummy), told him about Scottish history.

When he was 17, Stevenson attended Edinburgh University. His father wanted him to become a lighthouse engineer, but Robert wanted to be a writer. They eventually compromised on his becoming a lawyer so he would have some security. It was just one of many things they disagreed about.
