Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking

Reading Comprehension for January 8

Stephen Hawking has survived in style. He has given a whole new meaning to the word survivor. Disabled by an incurable disease that gave him a predicted lifespan of only two more years back in 1963, Stephen Hawking has gone on to lead a life full of successes that few people, even those with all the advantages in life, would even dare to aspire to.

His disability is a disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It causes a person's muscles to become weaker and waste away. It has restricted him to a wheelchair. The disease, and complications that have developed because of it, have also taken his voice. He now speaks through a computer and a voice synthesizer.

Enough about his problems, though; Stephen Hawking's successes could fill up whole books!
