What Does It Take to Be a Hero?

In Honor of Heroes

Reading Comprehension for September 11

The world has always loved heroes. Heroes are willing to step up and act in the face of danger when others stand by numb with fear. Did you ever wonder it means to be a hero?

Some people become heroes in life by doing things no one else has ever done. Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart were daring aviators who flew some of the first flights in small planes across the oceans. Earhart tried to become the first woman pilot to fly around the world and died in the attempt. Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, whose inventions still impact us today, were heroes to many. Some people choose sports or political figures as their heroes.

Sometimes a person can be a hero to someone and not even realize it. A lifeguard at a pool might jump in to help a struggling swimmer. No one else might notice it, but the swimmer does. A big sister might teach her little sister how to sew or to pitch a fastball. A big brother might teach his little brother to read or to cook. Big sisters and brothers often seem heroic to their younger siblings. You could call such people quiet heroes.
