Compsognathus, the Tiny Terror

One of the smallest dinosaurs that ever lived, Compsognathus (komp-sug-NATH-uss) was only about the size of a turkey. Its name means "dainty or elegant jaw." Its slender jaws had many small, sharp teeth, and the back ones were serrated like steak knives. Its skull was long and narrow, with the snout tapering to a narrow point. It had a thin neck and a long, slender tail. It held its tail straight out behind as it ran, which helped it balance.


Tiny little Compsognathus is classified in the group Theropoda, along with giants like Tyrannosaurus rex and Spinosaurus.
