Counting and recognizing numbers are two important skills students need to master in order to tackle other math skills in higher grades. Activities for beginning learners can be as simple as having them trace the numbers 0 to 9 or circle the number that matches a group of objects.

You can give students a slightly bigger challenge by having them count a series of objects and trace the number that corresponds with the objects they just counted. If students are circling the correct number, include some numbers that are displayed backward, as well as letters and other symbols, like the greater than symbol. You can provide young students with a number line they can reference if you want them to write the number without tracing it.
