Ready for some long division practices? Great! Study the example carefully, then complete four problems.
Long division breaks big division problems into smaller, easier steps. Here's how you do it: First, draw the division bracket (or division house). Write the dividend (the number you want to divide) inside the bracket and the divisor (the number you're dividing by) outside, to the left of the bracket. Start with the leftmost digit of the dividend. Ask yourself how many times the divisor fits into this part. Write that answer on top of the bracket, multiply it by the divisor, write the result under the leftmost digit, and fill any empty spaces below the other digits with zeros. Now subtract and write the result below. Then, bring down the next digit from the dividend and repeat these steps, moving from left to right until you finish. The numbers you write on top make up the final answer, called the quotient. Sometimes, there's a leftover number that can't be divided further. That leftover is called the remainder. If the remainder is 2, you write it as R2. If it's 5, you write R5. Now grab your pencil, and let's dive in!
