"Writing Words and Identifying First Letters With Pictures" is a worksheet that invites students to write 9 or 12 words. Each word is accompanied by a picture with letters for students to trace.
Kindergarten worksheets have 9 boxes with shaded letters and stars that show students where to begin when writing each letter. First grade worksheets have 12 words with dotted letters for students to trace. All worksheets are missing the first letter of each word. Students must use the picture clue to sound out the word and figure out which letter to write on the line before tracing the remaining letters in the word.
Identifying letter sounds and being able to write them are foundational skills students must learn in order to be successful in reading and writing, but also in other subjects, from social studies to science. You can combine both skills to give students double the practice.
Have students write the starting letter of a set of pictures, like "f" for flag or "m" for milk. The remainder of the word could be dashed or shaded for students to trace the remaining letters.
As students get more practice identifying different sounds, you could have them write the last letter or the second letter sound in a word. They could also pick the correct word from a word bank that matches each image, or they could color in the pictures that start with the same letter on a coloring page.
