Too Many Puppies and Kittens!
By Colleen Messina

1     Fat, cuddly puppies and kittens are fun. It is easy to love a puppy or kitten! Puppies and kittens need good homes. Many babies are born each year. Some of them don't have homes. This can be a big problem. One way to solve this problem is to spay and neuter your pets.

2     Spaying and neutering pets is also called "fixing" them. This is an operation. It is good to spay and neuter pets so that they do not have unwanted babies. A veterinarian does it. A fixed pet can't have babies. The operation is safe. It does not hurt the animal. The cat or dog is still a good pet. A female animal is spayed. A male animal is neutered.

3     Unwanted cats and dogs are not happy. They roam around. They do not get food. They do not get love. They often end up in animal shelters. If they don't find homes, they are put to sleep--forever. The Humane Society states that millions of cats and dogs are put to sleep each year. These animals could make good pets.
