Cards for Mother's Day
By Mary Lynn Bushong

     "Stepmothers are always evil!"

Sassy Johnson's words hung like a banner in Ben Connor's mind. He wasn't sure why they were staying there so stubbornly. He'd never even considered that before. Maybe that was because there had never been a reason before--at least, not until Barbara. He smiled. Barbara was as far from evil as you could get.

The first few times Barbara came to the house, Dad had Ben, Barney, and Bill clean the house. Even Buster, the dog, got bathed.

"We can't let Barbara think we're a bunch of sloppy bachelors," said Dad.

Barbara seemed to understand that they'd worked hard to get the house into shape. She didn't mention it directly but did find ways of telling each boy what a good worker he was.

Over the past few months, she'd done that many times. He felt good when Barbara was around. Perhaps he should get Barney's opinion. Ben went to Barney's room. Barney was sitting on the side of his bed, driving a radio-controlled car though a series of block obstacles on the floor.

"Hey, Barn, can I talk to you for a minute?"

Barney nodded. "As long as I can keep driving."

"I wondered what you think of Barbara," said Ben.
