Do I Really Need It?
By Kathleen W. Redman

1     Zane is an active boy. He likes to play outside. He likes sports. Basketball is his favorite sport. There is a court near his house. He meets his friends there. They all like to play basketball. Sometimes Zane runs to the court. Sometimes he rides his bicycle there. Almost every afternoon he gets there as soon as he can.

2     "Zane, don't forget to take water with you," his mother always says.

3     "Oh, Mom! Do I really need it?" Zane used to say. He does not ask that anymore.

4     One time Zane did not take water with him. He played very hard. He got very hot and sweaty. He was very thirsty, too. After a while, he felt very sick. He felt weak and tired.

5     By the time he walked home, Zane felt very bad. He was dizzy. He had a bad headache. His mom even had to take him to the doctor. The doctor said he was dehydrated. His body needed more liquid. She told him drinking a lot of water would help his body get better. It would help him feel better, too.
