¹     Have you ever poured water over a hill of sand or dirt? Did you see how the moving water cut small gullies into the sand or soil? Canyons are formed in the same way, sometimes through solid rock.
 
²     Canyons are deep valleys with steep walls. Gorges are another name for canyons and are usually smaller. Most gorges and canyons were formed by the moving water of a river. Rock is harder than sand. It takes nature a very long time to make a canyon. Water wears away rock very slowly. Gravel and sand carried by the water help grind away the riverbed.
