What Are Goods and Services?
By Cindy Grigg

1     People need money to buy food and clothes. They need money to pay for a place to live. People work to earn money. They spend money on goods and services. What are goods, and what are services?

2      Goods are things. Goods can be touched. Goods can be used or consumed. Food, books, and clothes are goods. A good such as an apple might be used just once. Some goods, such as books, can be used over and over again.

3      Services are things we pay someone else to do for us. When we go to the doctor, we buy a service. Some services we buy are haircuts, movies, and dance lessons. When we buy a service, we don't get a thing we can touch. But we do get something we need or want.
