Jack's Lantern
By Mary Lynn Bushong

"Grandpa," said Colleen, as she stuck her hand into the pumpkin. "Do you know why we use a pumpkin for Halloween?"

"It just so happens that I do," said Grandpa.

"Can you tell us now?" asked Dirk, Colleen's brother.

"I could probably manage to," said Grandpa. "Dirk, finish drawing the face you want on that pumpkin. I can cut it out while I talk."

Grandpa sat down behind the pumpkin while the two children worked.

"A long time ago there was a man named Jack. He was a stingy, mean, old man. He would not pay out any money if he could help it.

"One evening, he was out for a walk. Ahead of him at a cross roads he saw the devil. Jack figured that the devil had come to take him away. Jack talked him into letting him have one last drink.

"They sat in the pub together and drank until they could hardly stand up. When they were ready to go, Jack pretended he had no money. He persuaded the devil to become a coin to pay for the drinks. Once the pub owner went to bed, the devil could turn back again."

"Jack cheated the pub owner, didn't he, Grandpa?" asked Colleen.
