The Babe of Baseball

By Jody Williams
1     The batter stepped up to the plate. The pitcher threw the ball. The batter swung. He missed. The pitcher threw the ball again. The batter swung and missed. The batter now had two strikes. The crowd cheered. The batter used his bat to point. He pointed to the center field wall. The crowd became quiet. The pitcher threw the ball. The batter hit the ball. It went over the center field wall. That day is a part of baseball history.

2     The batter was George Herman Ruth Jr. He was born on February 6, 1895. He was born in Maryland. George did not have a happy childhood. His parents could not take care of him. When George was seven, his parents gave him to an orphanage. An orphanage is a home for children that do not have parents. The orphanage was also a school. That is where George learned to play baseball.

3     Brother Matthias was a priest at the school. He took care of George. He taught George how to play baseball. George played on the school's baseball team. He was the catcher. When he was 15 years old, he became the pitcher too.
