1 A group of men were in a room talking. Emma was a young girl. She listened from the next room as the men talked. They were talking about something that was going on in the world. Emma listened. She agreed with one of the men. She did not agree with the rest. She wanted to say something. She walked into the room. Emma said what she was thinking. The men told her to leave the room. They said that their conversation was only for men.
2 Emma lived in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It was a time when girls went to school. They were taught basic subjects. Then, some became teachers. Most got married. They had children. They cooked and sewed. Emma wanted more.
3 On February 23, 1787, Emma Hart was born. She was born to a large family. She was sixteenth out of seventeen children. She loved learning. Emma's father knew that she was smart. He talked with her about things in the world. They talked about math. He knew that she was special.
