1     Joey and his family went to a baseball game. They went to see the Los Angeles Dodgers play. Joey could not wait to see his favorite player. It was time. Number five was up to bat. The crowd started chanting. They yelled, "Nomar, Nomar, Nomar!" The pitch was thrown. Nomar hit the ball. It went over the right field wall. Nomar hit a home run!
 
2     Joey's favorite player is Nomar Garciaparra. His given name is Anthony Nomar Garciaparra. He is known as Nomar. Nomar is a unique name. His father's name is Ramon. Nomar is Ramon spelled backward. Nomar was born on July 23, 1973. He was born in California.
 
3     Nomar was always good at sports. During high school, he played many sports. He played football. He played soccer. He played baseball. He won awards in all of them. Nomar went to college. He went to Georgia Tech University. He played baseball. His team went to the College World Series in 1994.
 
4     After graduating from college, Nomar kept playing baseball. He was picked to play for the Boston Red Sox. He had to play with their minor league team first. He played in the minors for three seasons. In 1996, he played in his first major league game.
 
5     Nomar started his rookie season in 1997. A rookie is a player who is playing his first year with a team. That year Nomar hit thirty home runs. He was the leadoff hitter. He batted in ninety-eight runs. On November 3, 1997, he was named Rookie of the Year.
