Very Curious Music

By Kathleen W. Redman
Macy loves music, and she loves her computer. She uses her computer to help her with homework. She uses it to write stories. She uses it to send e-mail. She uses it most of the time to find different kinds of music. She can listen to music from all over the world on her computer. She likes finding good music for dancing.

Macy's favorite kind of music is pop. She likes dancing to fast pop music. It is very easy to find pop music on her computer. Sometimes she likes rock. Sometimes she likes country. But one day, she found some music she hadn't heard before. It was called jazz.

At first, this music sounded strange. It had so many notes! It seemed like it was going in all different directions. It had a strong rhythm. It also had very pretty melodies. The new music was very odd to Macy. She just could not figure out what was going on with this new music.

Macy looked up jazz music on her computer. She found a lot of facts about it.

     1. Jazz music came from the southern United States. New Orleans, Louisiana, is called "the birthplace of jazz."

     2. Jazz came into being near the beginning of the 1900s.

     3. Jazz is a mixture of African American and European music styles.

     4. Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum, and Billie Holiday are famous jazz musicians.

Macy learned many facts about jazz from her computer.
