Kaylie loved Saturday mornings. It was the one day of the week that the family did not have to get up at a particular time to go somewhere. They kept a busy schedule the rest of the week with school, work, and other responsibilities. Sundays were busy with church, visiting with relatives out of town, or volunteering. But Saturdays were reserved for sleeping late, fun, and family time -- at least in the morning.
Kaylie was part of a big family with five other brothers and sisters. As they had grown older and more capable in the kitchen, two family members took charge each week of making a big breakfast. This week was Michelle and Kaylie's turn.
Last night, Kaylie and Michelle had discussed what they would make for breakfast the next morning.
Michelle, the take-charge personality of the two of them, said, "I think we should make pancakes."
Kaylie, the detail-oriented of the two, agreed with that. "Do we have pancake mix and maple syrup?"
"Let's go check," Michelle said.
They went to the pantry and saw plenty of pancake mix. They also saw a large bottle of maple syrup. Kaylie pulled it down from the top shelf.
"Remember this, Michelle?" Kaylie asked.
"Isn't that the one we bought in Vermont last spring?" Michelle said.
