The Need to Read

By Brenda B. Covert
1     December is "Read a New Book Month." Book lovers don't need any encouragement. They will read any time, any place! Struggling readers need to be encouraged to read. We all have a need to read. The benefits of reading are many.

2     Here is an obvious benefit. Reading will help you do your school work! If you answer the questions without reading the lesson, you are probably guessing. Guesses are almost always wrong. By reading the lesson, you will gain the knowledge needed to answer the questions. You will learn.

3     The more you read, the better you are able to read. Reading builds your reading skills. Your vocabulary and comprehension skills will improve. As you exercise your reading skills, you will find that your speed increases. You will be able to read faster than you once did.
