1 Kindergarten is a German word that means "children's garden."
2 Karen was almost five years old. She wanted to go to kindergarten.
3 "Karen," her mother said, "you are not old enough. You can't cut with scissors yet."
4 "Yes, I can," Karen said. She cut out a paper star for her mother.
5 "Karen," her mother said, "you are not old enough. You can't dress yourself."
6 "Yes, I can," Karen said. She put on her shirt and pants. She put on her socks and shoes. She tied her shoes. She put on her coat. She buttoned it up. She put on her hat.
7 "Karen," her mother said, "you are not old enough. You can't count to ten."
8 "Yes, I can," Karen said. "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen! I can count past ten."
