Between Two Slices of Bread

By Jody Williams
1     What is a sandwich? It is something to eat. It is a filling between two slices of bread. The sandwich has been around for a long time. It was not always called a sandwich.

2     Over 2,000 years ago, fillings were eaten between bread. Rabbi Hillel put meat between two pieces of matzo. Matzo is flat bread. He added herbs. Today we would call that a sandwich. Then, it did not have a name.

3     On October 14, 1762, the word sandwich was first used for food between two pieces of bread. Sandwich is a town in England. John Montagu was the Earl of Sandwich. He liked to play cards. One night he did not want to stop playing cards. He asked for some bread and meat. He put the meat between two pieces of bread.
