Angels with Dirty Faces
By Kathleen W. Redman
Mrs. Dean loved her cat. His name was Jerry. He was three years old. He had orange and white fur.
One day Mrs. Dean bought a collar for Jerry. It was red. It had a silver buckle. She tried to put it on Jerry.
Jerry did not like the collar. He ran away from Mrs. Dean. He jumped on a chair. He jumped on the table. He made the vase fall. Water was everywhere. Flowers were everywhere!
Jerry was afraid. He jumped off the table. He ran out the door. He ran and ran and ran.
Jerry ran past the school. He ran past the post office. He ran past the hospital. Soon he was lost.
It was night. Jerry was very tired. He crawled into a pipe and went to sleep.
Mrs. Dean was so sad. She called, "Here, kitty, kitty. Here, Jerry!" She could not find her cat.
Mrs. Dean walked down the street. She walked past the school. She called Jerry. "Here, kitty, kitty," she said. Jerry did not come.
Mrs. Dean walked past the post office. She called Jerry. "Here, kitty, kitty," she said. Jerry did not come.
Mrs. Dean walked past the hospital. She called Jerry. "Here, kitty, kitty," she said. "Jerry, please come back." Jerry did not come.
