May I Borrow a Stamp?

By Jody Williams
1     My grandma and grandpa went on vacation. They said they would send me a postcard. I ran to the mailbox. I opened it up. Inside was a postcard. It took a few days to get to me.

2     Today, the mail service helps us send things all over the world. It takes a few days. Some things can be mailed overnight. In the early 1600s, there were no post offices. There were no mail carriers. Messages were sent through friends. Storekeepers passed along messages. Native Americans carried messages from one place to another.

3     In colonial times, many messages needed to go to England. That was where most of the people were from. On November 5, 1639, the first colonial post office was set up in Boston, Massachusetts. It was in a tavern. Other towns used coffee shops.
