Golf - A Game to Hate and Love
By Beth Beutler
1 "Sometimes I hate this game," muttered Benjamin, wrinkling his face in disgust. He had just putted his golf ball and missed the hole by less than an inch. "Why did I even start playing?"
2 Benjamin had been playing golf for as long as he could remember. His father loved the game and played nearly every Saturday morning. As soon as Benjamin was old enough to swing a club, they went out into their hilly backyard and began hitting golf balls. Benjamin guessed he was about three or four years old at the time.
3 Benjamin's first club was a plastic toy about as tall as he was. He would whack the little white balls all around the yard while his dad practiced with various clubs, hitting balls into the wooded lot behind the house. After a short time, Dad gave Benjamin a couple of his old clubs, and Benjamin continued to hit the plastic balls.
4 As time went by, Benjamin graduated to hitting real golf balls. One day, his father told him, "Come with me, son. Bring your clubs. We're going to the driving range." Benjamin looked at his dad in surprise. Dad usually went by himself to the driving range on Monday and Thursday evenings. Benjamin had been curious about it but had never asked to go.
