By Phyllis Naegeli
Carrie walked around the party store trying to choose a theme for her birthday. She picked up a Hawaiian lei and put it down. She looked at the princess items and shook her head.
"Maybe I won't have a party this year," she said to her mom. "It's not really my birthday anyway."
"Oh, Carrie," said Mom. "I know it's hard to have your birthday on February 29th. We can still celebrate another year of your life even though the calendar doesn't show the day."
"Why does February have to be the shortest month? If all the months had the same number of days, I'd have a birthday!" Carrie cried.
Mom put her arm across Carrie's shoulder. "Let's pick what we need for your birthday party. I have to go to the bookstore, too. We'll look for a book on calendars while we're there."
"Okay," said Carrie.
She decided to have a Hawaiian theme for her birthday. They bought floral leis and grass skirts. They ordered balloons that looked like palm trees and a big banner that had a beach scene on it. As they found everything they needed, Carried cheered up a little.
After making their purchases, they walked to the bookstore at the mall. They went to the children's section to see what they could find. Carrie found a book with the poem:
