Kyle Wants to Help
By Phyllis Naegeli
Soft music played in the background of the living room where Melissa sat knitting. The needles clicked as she worked on a small mitten. "Knit one, purl two, knit one, purl two," she counted aloud.
Her younger brother, Kyle, walked over to where Melissa was sitting. "What are you doing?"
Melissa finished the stitch and turned to her brother. "Knitting a pair of mittens." Melissa turned back to her work. "Knit one, purl two."
"Why?" asked Kyle, leaning over the arm of the sofa.
"Knit one, purl two." Melissa stopped again. "To give to charity."
Kyle looked puzzled. "What's charity?"
Melissa finished the row she was working on. She put the knitting needles down on a table next to her. "A charity is a group that collects and gives things to people in need."
"Like what?" asked Kyle as he climbed up to sit next to Melissa on the couch.
Melissa picked up a pile of knitted items off the table. "For example, I'm making these hats, scarves, and mittens for a charity called Cozy Cuddles for Kids. They collect items to give to kids who don't have them."
"Why don't they have them?"
"Well, they might be very poor. Maybe their parents are sick or out of work. There are many children who need to keep warm in the winter. Cozy Cuddles for Kids gives them cuddly, warm hats, mittens, scarves, and coats to help."
