Ice Age Mammals: The Woolly Rhino
By Joyce Furstenau

1     Painting: Charles R. Knight, H. Osborn, 1916

2     Many of the world's largest mammals became extinct after the last ice age. One of these mammals was the woolly rhinoceros. Its scientific name is Coelodonta (see-loh-DON-tah).

3     The woolly rhino was native to the northern regions of Europe and Asia. Scientists disagree on whether this prehistoric mammal was a grazer or a browser. (Grazers eat mostly grass, and browsers eat mostly leaves.) It was definitely a plant-eater (herbivore). It ate whatever was available in the cold, dry steppe-tundra of Eurasia.
