Grandma's Magic Liquid
By Colleen Messina

Kendra loved to visit her grandmother on her farm, and she often went there for several weeks during her summer vacation. The farm was in the rolling hills of rural Ohio. The fields around Grandma's house were full of corn. Kendra loved the perky green cornstalks with yellow tassels that waved against the cloud-studded sky.

Kendra was a tomboy. She detested dresses and preferred to wear jeans and baseball caps instead. She loved the farm because there were so many active things for her to do. She climbed apple trees in the orchard. She mowed the grass with a big riding mower. She fed the chickens and cows and played with frisky, friendly farm kittens.

With her love of adventure, Kendra had some mishaps from time to time. Sometimes she scraped her knee or got oil on her jeans. Grandma always had an answer to every problem. It was absolutely astounding to Kendra that Grandma seemed to be able to fix so many things with one simple ingredient. Grandma called it her magic liquid. Kendra recalled some ways Grandma used her magic liquid.

"Grandma," Kendra called. "I got jam on my shirt. It's my favorite one. Can you get the spot off?"

"Of course," said Grandma. "We'll scrub that spot with my magic liquid, and you'll see. Soon your shirt will be as good as new."

Then Grandma would take her bottle of magic liquid, pour some on a cotton ball, and rub it on the stain. Then she washed the shirt, and the stain was miraculously gone. The magic liquid worked!

Another day, Kendra noticed many ants around the front door and windows of the house. Kendra thought ants were cool, but Grandma did not want them in the house.

"I will use my magic liquid. The ants will go somewhere else, and then you can watch them," said Grandma.
