Thomas Jefferson: A Man of Books
By Kathleen W. Redman

1     Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States. He was born on April 13, 1743 in Virginia. He loved to learn. He loved to read. He spent his lifetime collecting books. He learned about science. He read about religion and philosophy. He learned to speak other languages. He was a great writer, too. He was one of the writers of the Declaration of Independence.

2     Jefferson was the third of ten children in his family. He started school in 1752. He started studying Latin, Greek, and French when he was nine years old. He learned to ride horses and learned to study nature. From all his studies, he learned to love reading.

3     Jefferson went to study at the College of William and Mary when he was sixteen years old. He worked hard. He studied many subjects. His love of reading helped him graduate from college with honors. He became a lawyer in 1767.
