What are Patterns in Mathematics?

It's important for teachers to fully understand and effectively teach patterns because these basic math concepts will help students become more intuitive, creative thinkers as they learn to build on their knowledge of patterns.

Mathematics has a fundamental structure, which allows us to solve math problems. The structure of math is largely based on finding and manipulating patterns. The generalization of patterns, or the ability to apply a pattern to multiple materials and contexts, is a fundamental skill for students to master. They will also need to understand how to copy, extend, and create patterns of their own.

Why are Patterns Important?

As mentioned above, patterns are the fundamental structure of math. A pattern is, at the most basic level, a regularity that one can perceive. Repeating patterns, such as ABAB, are one of several types of patterns that students should be able to recognize.

Children are exposed to patterns throughout their life, well before the concept is introduced in math class. The goal of math education in early grades is to help students deepen their understanding of patterns, and articulate that understanding clearly, in mathematical terms. When students understand patterns, they should be able to identify them, describe them, reproduce them, extend them, fill in missing elements, and create new patterns. Pattern-based thinking is how children develop algebraic thinking, which is another fundamental skill they will rely on throughout their education.
