A New Tradition

Buy Nothing Day

Reading Comprehension for November 29

While his family was spending the weekend in Canada, Devon picked up a copy of Adbusters magazine, a Canadian publication started by Kalle Lasn. He had been born in Estonia but had become a citizen of Canada. Devon neither knew nor cared about that; his interest in the magazine was the title and the weird graphic on the cover.

Flipping through the pages, Devon discovered that it was a magazine with no ads. It existed through subscriptions only. He also learned that it was full of philosophical and activist-type articles that held no interest for the teen. The only thing that really caught his eye was the mention of a holiday that Devon had never before heard of.

"Hey, Dad!" His father turned from the newspaper headlines to see what Devon wanted. "Have you ever heard of 'Buy Nothing Day'?"

Mr. Mills shrugged and shook his head.
