In the book, Pinocchio was a puppet. He was a marionette. A marionette is a puppet with strings. Its arms and legs can move. Pinocchio had to learn to be kind. If he lied, his nose grew. It went back to normal when he told the truth. Bad things happened to him. In the end, he became a real boy.
