A Special Kind of Cake

November 30 - Sacher Torte Day

Reading Comprehension for November 30

"Let's make a Sacher Torte," Lucinda, an exchange student from Austria, said to Jeremiah. She was living with his family while attending school in the United States.

"What are you talking about?" Jeremiah answered, looking up from his video game.

"Let's make a Sacher Torte. Sacher Torte Day is coming."

"I don't even know what a Sacher Torte is!" Jeremiah answered with a shrug.

Lucinda smiled. "A Sacher Torte is a special dessert native to my country. It is a delicious cake."

"I'm game," Jeremiah said. "Tell me more."

"Let's go to the kitchen and get started," Lucinda replied.

They went into the kitchen. Lucinda began to take out ingredients. She got out eggs, margarine, chocolate squares, and apricot preserves from the refrigerator. Then, she went to the pantry and got out vanilla, sugar, flour, and powdered sugar. As she gathered ingredients, she explained the history of the cake.
