Beginning in the 1930s, Nazism rose to power in Germany. The Nazi leader was a man named Adolf Hitler. Hitler and the Nazis believed many things. One was the importance of a strong government. Not just strong, but controlling.


Nazis believed that they should control everything. They wanted to control not just Germany, but all of Europe. Some believed they should control the world. Nazis killed anyone who didn't agree. They also wanted to kill those who weren't like them. Jews were a favorite target of Nazis. Nazis killed millions of European Jews.


Nazism is a kind of fascist government. Fascists believe that their nation is the best nation in the world. They believe that their people are the best. Anyone who is different is driven out or killed. They believe that the government should control everything. The leader of a fascist government is a dictator. A dictator rules his country with total power. If anyone speaks against the dictator, he is killed.
