Apple Heads

Johnny Appleseed Day

Reading Comprehension for September 26

"Yuck," said Carla after she bit into an apple. "It is soft and does not taste good."

"Why not choose another one?" asked Grandpa.

"They all look the same," said Carla. "May we go to the orchard for new ones?"

"Not today," said Grandpa. "I know of something else we can do with those apples."

"Do you mean we can put them in a pie?"

Grandpa shook his head. "We can make apple heads."

"Apple heads?" asked Carla, making a face.

"That's right," said Grandpa with a twinkle in his eye. "Let me show you how it is done."

Grandpa chose an apple out of the bag. Then he used a paring knife to take the skin off. He used the knife to make a few quick cuts in the side of the apple.
