Reading Comprehension for November 14

Imagine a young lady sitting before you. She has red hair in pigtails. She wears mismatched stockings. She stands up before you and demonstrates her incredible strength. What if someone tells you she is a famous character in a book? Who would you guess she is? If you guess Pippi Longstocking, you'll be right.

Who created this very famous and recognizable character? Astrid Lindgren did. Astrid was born with the name Astrid Ericsson on November 14, 1907. She was born on a farm called Nas in Sweden. Nas was located outside the town of Vimmerby. Astrid was the second of four children. Her parents were Samuel and Hanna Ericsson. Her father was a farmer. Astrid's parents encouraged the children's storytelling and imagination. They were given a lot of freedom, too. Astrid loved to read Anne of Green Gables and Pollyanna books. As you can tell, Astrid liked to read books that had a girl as the heroine.

From 1924 to 1926, Astrid worked as a reporter for a local newspaper. Then she moved to Stockholm and worked in the office of the Royal Automobile Club. In 1931, she married Sture Lindgren. She raised two children with him.
