Attracting Birds

National Bird Feeding Month

Reading Comprehension for February 21

February is National Bird Feeding Month. While many birds in North America migrate south for the winter, some stay put. Those birds have to survive on a reduced food supply. We can help them by putting up bird feeders. We can create a sanctuary for our feathered friends.

There are five ways you can attract birds to your area and help them survive.

1. Provide a place for them to eat, drink, and bathe.

2. Fill feeders with the kind of birdseed or nectar that birds in your area like to eat.

3. Keep the feeder clean. Would you like to eat off dirty dishes and drink out of grimy cups? Of course not! Birds don't like a mess either.

4. Keep poisons away from bird feeders and bird baths. This would include bug killers and weed killers. If it's bad for you, then it's bad for animals as well.

5. Decorate windows to keep birds from flying into them. Window clings, suncatchers, and decals can help birds to steer away from windows instead of trying to fly through them.
