Boiling Over

What a morning! Hugh had turned off his alarm clock and had gone back to sleep. Now he was late. He threw on his clothes and ran down the stairs. His mother had already left for work. His breakfast was on the table.

Hugh grabbed the toast and ran out the door. He didn't have time to sit down. He took a bite while he was running to the bus stop. The toast was cold. Yuck! No breakfast for me, he thought, as he threw the toast in the trash basket at the bus stop.

He waited and waited but the bus didn't come. A car stopped and he saw his Uncle James.

"Are you waiting for the bus?" Uncle James asked.

"Yes, but I think I missed it," Hugh answered.

"Come on. Get in. I will take you to school."

Hugh jumped in the car and rode with his uncle to school. He was really frustrated. Nothing was going right! He had overslept, he had to hurry to get dressed, his breakfast was cold, and he missed the bus. Now he was late to school.

Hugh ran to his classroom and burst through the door. He ran right into his teacher, Mrs. Ricco.

"Whoa! Slow down, Hugh," she said.

Slow down? What was she thinking? He couldn't slow down. Everything was going wrong. He dropped his book bag on the floor and flopped down in his seat. Mr. Lockman was standing at the front of the classroom.

"Good morning, Hugh," he said. "You look like you're a bit stressed this morning."
