What comes to mind when you read the title? Maybe you see stern soldiers riding bulky buffalo into battle. In 1866, the U.S. Army created six all-black regiments (troops). Native Americans nicknamed them Buffalo Soldiers. (They rode horses, not buffalo.) Over the years, at least twenty Buffalo Soldiers earned the Medal of Honor. That is the highest award they could get! One Buffalo Soldier was really a woman. Cathay Williams was a former slave. She pretended to be a man in order to become a soldier.
