Canada and World War I

World War I is often called the Great War. It was the biggest war people had ever seen. Some said it was a war that would end all wars.

Britain declared war on Germany in August 1914. Canada jumped into the fight, too. Canada was still very close to Britain. She was a friend to Britain. She wanted to help when Britain went to war.

At first, Canada had a very small army. Right away, 30,000 men joined up. This was more than the army thought it would have. The men were sent to Valcartier, Quebec, for training. They were the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

By 1916, people knew it would not be a short war. They stopped volunteering. Prime Minister Borden needed more soldiers. He used conscription to get them. Many French-Canadians were angry about that. They began having marches and rallies against it.
