Chimney Sweeps

Do you have a fireplace in your house? What do your parents do when the chimney gets dirty? They probably do the same thing people did two hundred years ago. They hire a chimney sweep.

Chimney sweeps are people who clean chimneys. Long ago, very small children climbed up inside chimneys and cleaned them. It was hard work. It was dangerous, too. Many children got sick from it. Some fell and broke bones. Some died.

Now chimney sweeps have to be at least twenty-one years old. They don't climb in chimneys much, either. They use tools with long handles. Chimney sweeps also care for chimneys used by many kinds of heating methods.
